A History.

In 1988, Capt. Dana Dean, an outreach minister, and Gloria Clack, along with several Angus locals founded a food bank in Capt. Dean’s basement to help residents in need. As demand grew, it moved to the Scout building on Huron Street and then became Angus Food Bank Inc. in 1989 complete with charitable status. The food bank shifted locations several times before receiving a 99-year lease near the Angus Arena in 1991, sharing space and fundraising efforts with the Greater Angus Youth Alive Centre. Volunteers handled construction and raised enough funds to pay for their half of the prefabricated building. When the Nottawasaga Pines secondary school was built, the building was relocated behind the arena, where it remains today.

Food Rescue/Food Sourcing.

Second Harvest is Canada’s largest food rescue organization and a global thought leader on food waste and perishable food redistribution. It rescues unsold surplus food from thousands of food businesses from across the supply chain to redistribute it to non-profits in every province and territory. This prevents harmful greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere while improving access to nutrition for millions of Canadians experiencing food insecurity.

Locally, we receive weekly Second Harvest donations from Sobeys, No Frills, Starbucks and Shoppers Drug Mart and occasional donations from other businesses.
